Best Y Level for Every Ore in Minecraft 1.21
Minecraft 1.18 completely overhauled ore distribution with triangular generation patterns and expanded world depth. The old rules no longer apply. This guide provides the definitive reference for where every ore spawns in 1.21, what Y level gives the highest density, and how to mine each one efficiently.

Detailed Breakdown
Ore-by-Ore Analysis
Below is a comprehensive breakdown of each ore with generation details, mining tips, and relevant strategies.
Diamond Ore
Diamond ore generates between Y=-64 and Y=16 with a sharp triangular distribution peaking at Y=-59. Two generation passes run per chunk: the standard batch and an additional buried batch that only places ore fully surrounded by solid blocks. The reduced air exposure mechanic also removes some diamond ore adjacent to caves and open spaces.
Mine at Y=-59 for maximum density. Use a Fortune III pickaxe to average 2.2 diamonds per ore block instead of 1. For a complete diamond strategy, read our diamond mining guide.
Iron Ore
Iron has the most complex generation of any Overworld ore, with three separate batches. The first and largest batch generates between Y=-24 and Y=56 with a triangular distribution peaking at Y=16. The second batch is a uniform distribution between Y=-64 and Y=72. The third batch generates at high altitudes between Y=80 and Y=384, peaking at Y=232.
For general survival play, mine iron at Y=16 where the largest batch peaks. If you are building a base in the mountains, the high-altitude batch around Y=232 can also be productive. Iron ore drops raw iron, and Fortune III increases the drop to an average of 2.2 raw iron per block, making Fortune III worthwhile for iron as well.
Gold Ore (Overworld)
Overworld gold generates between Y=-64 and Y=32 with a triangular distribution peaking at Y=-16. Gold is relatively rare in most biomes. However, badlands (mesa) biomes have a bonus generation pass that spawns extra gold between Y=32 and Y=256, making badlands the single best biome for gold mining.
Like iron, gold ore drops raw gold and benefits from Fortune III. If you need large quantities of gold for golden apples or powered rails, consider farming nether gold ore in the Nether instead, which is far more abundant.
Emerald Ore
Emerald ore generates exclusively in mountain biomes between Y=-16 and Y=320. The distribution is triangular, heavily weighted toward high altitudes with a peak around Y=232. Emeralds only spawn as single blocks. There are no multi-block emerald veins.
While emerald ore is rare, it is not the best way to obtain emeralds. Trading with villagers, particularly librarians and farmers, yields far more emeralds per hour than mining. That said, Fortune III increases emerald drops to an average of 2.2 per block, and mining emeralds at high altitudes in mountains can supplement your trading income.
Lapis Lazuli Ore
Lapis generates between Y=-64 and Y=64 with a triangular distribution peaking at Y=0. A second buried batch generates uniformly across the same range but only places ore surrounded by solid blocks. Lapis is essential for enchanting, as each enchantment costs 1-3 lapis depending on the level.
Mine at Y=0 for the highest lapis concentration. Fortune III is extremely effective on lapis, increasing the average drop from 4-9 pieces per block to potentially 32 pieces per block. A single vein with Fortune III can yield enough lapis for dozens of enchantments.
Redstone Ore
Redstone generates between Y=-64 and Y=16. It has a uniform batch (constant density) between Y=-64 and Y=-32, plus a triangular batch peaking lower in its range. The practical result is that redstone is extremely common at Y=-59, conveniently the same level as peak diamond density. Mining for diamonds at this level also yields large amounts of redstone.
Fortune III increases redstone dust drops from 4-5 per block to a maximum of 8. Redstone is rarely in short supply for players who mine at diamond depth regularly.
Copper Ore
Copper generates between Y=-16 and Y=112 with a triangular distribution peaking at Y=48. Copper veins can be quite large, up to 20 blocks per vein. In dripstone cave biomes, copper generation is increased, making these caves excellent for copper farming.
Copper ore drops 2-5 raw copper, increased with Fortune. Since the introduction of the copper bulb and other copper blocks in recent updates, demand for copper has increased. Mining at Y=48 in or near dripstone caves gives the best yield.
Coal Ore
Coal generates between Y=0 and Y=320 with two passes. The primary batch is triangular, peaking at Y=96. A secondary uniform batch generates between Y=136 and Y=320. Coal is the most abundant Overworld ore and has reduced air exposure similar to diamonds -- surface veins are sometimes culled during generation.
You rarely need to specifically mine for coal in the modern game. It appears frequently while mining for other ores, caving, and building in mountains. Fortune III maximizes coal drops if you do need bulk quantities for smelting or trading.
Ancient Debris
Ancient debris generates exclusively in the Nether between Y=8 and Y=119, with the primary batch concentrated between Y=8 and Y=22 (peaking at Y=15). It is the rarest ore in the game at roughly 1.65 blocks per chunk. Fortune does not affect its drops.
For detailed strategies including bed mining, TNT mining, and the X-Ray method, see our dedicated ancient debris guide.
Nether Gold Ore
Nether gold ore generates uniformly between Y=10 and Y=117 in all Nether biomes. It is very common and easy to spot. Each block drops 2-6 gold nuggets, which Fortune III can boost to a maximum of 24 nuggets. Nine nuggets craft into one gold ingot, so Fortune III dramatically improves the gold-per-block ratio. Mining nether gold at Y=15 while searching for ancient debris is an efficient combo.
Nether Quartz Ore
Nether quartz generates uniformly between Y=10 and Y=117, making it one of the most abundant ores in the game at roughly 80 blocks per chunk. Each block drops 1 nether quartz, increased to an average of 2.5 with Fortune III. Quartz is used for comparators, observers, daylight sensors, and decorative quartz blocks. Mining it is also a solid XP source since each ore block drops experience.
Strategy
General Mining Tips
Combine ore farming with your mining level choice. If you mine at Y=-59, you automatically collect diamonds, redstone, lapis, and some gold. If you mine at Y=16, you maximize iron while still finding occasional gold and lapis. Choose your depth based on what you need most.
Always bring Fortune III pickaxes for mining ore. The drop multiplier applies to diamonds, emeralds, lapis, redstone, coal, nether quartz, nether gold, copper, iron, and gold. The only ore where Fortune does not help is ancient debris.
Use Silk Touch to stockpile ore blocks if you do not have Fortune III yet. You can mine everything now and break it later once you enchant a Fortune III pickaxe. This prevents wasting any ore on sub-optimal drops.
Beacons with Haste II dramatically increase mining speed. Place a full beacon at your mining depth and select Haste II to break stone and deepslate almost instantly with an Efficiency V netherite pickaxe. This is especially effective for branch mining at Y=-59.
X-Ray makes all of this information even more powerful. When you can see every ore through solid blocks, knowing the optimal Y levels means you can position yourself at exactly the right depth and immediately spot every vein in range. Install the resource pack using our installation guide to combine visibility with knowledge for maximum efficiency.
